How do I get more work in the climate and social impact space?
When you're looking for more impact work, you might find that your existing network isn't quite right for it. So, it's time to expand your connections, which is a lot like planting a garden. 🌱
This is a question I often hear, and I've asked myself many times too. When you're looking for more impact work, you might find that your existing network isn't quite right for it. So, it's time to expand your connections, which is a lot like planting a garden. 🌱
It takes time. You plant seeds; some grow quickly, like lettuce, while others take longer, like apricot trees. The challenge with long-term investments like networking is that we often don't see immediate results, even though we put in a lot of effort.
Here's a practical tip for you to stay consistent: visualise your progress.
I decided to invest more energy into growing my LinkedIn network and aimed to connect with at least six new people each week. To make it fun and track my progress visually, I use a card game. I add a card for each new connection I make. It's a playful approach that provides a tangible sense of progress, unlike just spending 30 minutes on LinkedIn. (📷 below)
James Clear has written more extensively about what he calls the 'Paper Clip Strategy' here. It's an effective way to stick with good habits.
So when you're feeling discouraged or things seem tough, remember this garden metaphor to maintain determination, persistence, and consistency. Keep nurturing your garden and harvesting your fruits. Happy planting! 🌳
PS: Thank you, Mary Lemmer, for gifting me this metaphor.
