Made me think about how we aren’t taught to work in this way as a freelancer. We have to learn on or in the job. But I also think we never quite get the same validation of our value in a job (other than getting the job) s we do when we freelance, because the client can say always no. The fact they don’t tells you you’re useful and valuable.

I believe that as an independent you need to rely much more on internal validation. Especially if you choose to be visible. You don't get much feedback and what I also often hear is that many are very self critical as you don't have colleagues, reviews or other rituals that are designed to give you feedback. So when you are sought after and have a lot of work you might perceive it as a lot of validation but when there are dry spells a lot of the people I speak to struggle and start doubting themselves. What is your experience?

Yep I can see that too if you’re not working. I suppose I feel like there’s an opportunity for genuine validation if you learn to rely on yourself. I think when I was in a job I relied on external validation from boss and colleagues more than was healthy. Now I’m less reliant.
